The 2024 Food Lion CIAA Men's and Women's basketball tournament will take place from February 26 to March 3 at the CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore, Maryland.

B-State Celebrates Inaugural Honored Accelerated Nursing Graduates

On November 30, 2023, the first group of students in West Virginia to complete their nursing education in an accelerated program was honored in a pinning ceremony at Bluefield State University. This pioneering group includes Christen Blackburn, Zachary Cline, Hannah Goode, Julie Murphy, and Angela Trussell. The pinning ceremony is a long-standing student tradition in nursing education and marks the completion of all educational requirements to be a nurse. Accelerated nursing programs allow students to earn their Associate of Science in Nursing (A.S.N.) degree in about 18 months.

Alumnus Returns to Lead Bluefield State University

The Board of Governors of Bluefield State University is pleased to announce the appointment of alumnus Dr. Darrin Martin as its Interim President, following the resignation of Dr. Robin Capehart.  Dr. Martin will serve as Interim President while a search is undertaken for the next President of the University.  The announcement was made at a November 20, 2023, special meeting of the Board.
Dr. Martin’s appointment is especially meaningful, because he, his mother, and his grandmother are also Bluefield State graduates.  “I am passionate about Bluefield State and am committed to the next chapters of the University,” said Martin.

Robin Capehart Announces Retirement as B-State President

Bluefield State University President Robin Capehart announced that he will be retiring as president of the Institution.  At this afternoon’s Board of Governors’ meeting, the Board accepted Capehart’s resignation, effective December 31, 2023.  Until then, he will assist in the transition of responsibilities to an acting President, to be selected by the Board in the near future.

Bluefield State has been designated as a 2023 Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader.  On September 18, the U.S. Department of State announced that BSU was included as one of 19 HBCUs as “Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders” in recognition of their noteworthy engagement with the Fulbright Program during the 2022-23 academic year.

BSU Receives $444K grant from National Institute of Health

Bluefield State University has received a $444,000 Academic Research Enhancement Award (R15) from the National Institute of Health.  Dr. Tesfaye Belay, a BSU Professor of Biology, authored the grant, which provides funding over three years for supporting research, creating research opportunities for students, and strengthening the research environment at the University.

Bluefield State University President Robin Capehart has appointed Dr. Ted Lewis as BSU—Beckley’s President and Dr. Sarita A. Rhonemus as Bluefield State University Interim Provost. Dr. Lewis previously served as Bluefield State Provost and Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs. Dr. Rhonemus was the BSU Associate Provost of Academic Affairs at the time of her appointment as Acting Provost.
